    Chipmunks are the problem.

I was noticing over the last month many many holes in our front yard and in the flower bed.   I wasn't sure what they were, and my Orkin guy was theroizing they were mole holes.   Today I decided to find out.  I stamped all of them closed and waited to see if I could see anything.   CHIPMONKS!!!!   Cute yes.  But distructive.  I can't have them so close to my house and ruining my flowerbed.  So I have decided to act.   I wasn't really keen on poison... I wanted to try some other stuff first.   This is my first attempt.   I call it Chipmunk swimming pool.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting If this works I will be thrilled.   Pretty low tech.   I'll be a little grossed out by the results, chipmunks are pretty cute after all- but this is all outweighed for me by the negative effect they are having on the property.  I don't mind them so much if they stick to being further from the house- but they are too close now.

Thanks, I'll be building one tonight. I inadvertently caught a chipmunk in the bird netting I put around my beet bed trying to keep out whatever was harvesting my beets early.

To e-mail, I've figured out, click on the thing that says (No Name).  If you have any questions about the trap, I can send you a diagram if you e-mail me.

It's a good idea, but chipmunks are pretty smart.  I have constructed a lot of live traps.  You could just "dispose" of your catches after you got them, but the workings are simple.  First, make a cage out of wire mesh, leaving one side open.  Then, make a platform out of a really thin piece of wood or use corrugated cardboard.  Put the platform in the back of the cage, then attach a paper clip to one side and make it stick thru the mesh, and attach the platform in the back to the bottom of the cage with paper clips, too.  Make a door out of wire and attach it at the top with some wire "hinges," then attach some rubber bands to it and the inside of the cage to pull it shut.  Use a piece of bent metal stripping as a latch, so it can close over it, but the stripping will click back up after the door closes.  Finally, attach a string to the door and tie a paperclip to the end.  put down a piece of wood for the clip to rest on, and hold it to protrude over the wood towards the bent paperclip on the platform.  To get the string to curve around to work that way, you will need a piece of wood attached several inches from the back of the trap with two nails protruding from the side to string the string around.  Stick the platform clip, which is bent, in the other clip, so when the platform goes down, it pulls out from the string's clip and lets the door close.  Lastly, bait the trap.   E-mail me if you have questions.  Another method to catch chipmunks is to find the second entrance to the hole and put a milk jug's open end in the first.  Stick a hose down the second hole and turn it on.  The chipmunk will run straight into the jug.  One of my friends' grandma does this, then beats the life out of the thing with a blunt object, while it's still in the jug.  I think it's a good idea.  Wage war upon the chipmunks!
