5/25/2009 How cool is that? Am zon dot com just launched a new program where selected people (me) get to review selected products for free. I just signed up and they are already sending me two items that I requested from grocery. I didn't feel like reviewing books because I would have had to read them, and I wasn't in a reading mood. :) I think I got selected because I put in a lot of reviews, and now I am glad I did! Nice perk! Free merchandise, and it looks as if I get to pick and choose what I want. 5/3/2009 See I am writing something. I said I might Payton had a birthday Party this Saturday at a friends house in town. They had rented (?) a blow-up bouncy castle. I think that is what Payton played on the entire time. Meanwhile part of the siding from the trim our house came off. Tim tried re-attaching it with no luck, it is just too warped and bent. A trip to Omaha to the various hardware stores produced no results. I'll be calling the siding places Monday to get quotes. I feel as if this is going to be expensive. 4/26/2009 I'm going to take a break. You may notice I am not updating as regularly anymore. I am not going to delete my blog but I think for now I am going to go on hiatus for awhile, then re-assess later on. I may update here and there, or I may not... but I don't want to feel a 'nagging obligation' to update regularly since I don't have the time or inclination. I'm mostly on facebook if I am anywhere online, so if you do have a facebook account you can always catch up with what's new there, or if not, you can always go the "old fashioned" email route. :) 4/13/2009 Easter, StuffAdded some photos from Easter, didn't take that many. It was a busy day though, Church was kind of frantic because the kids did their egg hunt and the choir sang so it felt like double duty. Went to the folks' for lunch then Johnny and Lindsay's for an hour or so before heading home.
The good news is that I didn't eat too much, which I am prone to do on holidays.
![]() 4/6/2009 Summer SchoolHad a brief talk with one of Payton's teachers' today after dropping him off. They are going to do something they have never tried before. This summer Payton will go to "summer school" for one week out of each month and it will be sort of like an independent study time. I suggested "science" and so they are going to run with that and do a summer of science. I think there will be one other kid with him in there, but I am not 100% sure. I am sort of excited about it because the school probably has more cool science-y type equipment and supplies than I have. I think he would actually get some eduational value out of it, something that has been lacking up until now.
Picked up my taxes today, and while we do (as usual) owe money - it was not nearly the financial hit I thought it would be.
4/4/2009 Kindergarden / SnowPayton had kindergarden round up on Friday. He was very excited to go, but then a little teary eyed when we got to the door, not too bad - I could see it in his eyes he was nervous though. But when I told him they had a computer, and the teacher offered to walk him in the door he was over that quickly. After the day was over his favorite part was eating lunch - oddly enough. I asked if he liked Kindergarden and he said he did.
We are expecting a snow storm/blizzard later this evening. Not sure when it will hit exactly. I had already taken the snow poles from the driveway down and now I have to go put them up again as we are expecting a possible 8 inches. I am concerned about being able to get to church tomorrow. I am thinking we may cancel Sunday School - I suppose the call is ours since we run it. I'll probably see how the weather shapes up and call Pastor to see how the roads are in town tomorrow morning.
![]() 3/25/2009 Had an Art breakthrough with PaytonPayton is great at all things academic. Art though, is his Achilles heel. Not good at it, and not interested in doing it. At our parent teacher conferences, his teacher says that in Kindergarten they tend to focus a lot on coloring, and she was worried about Payton growing frustrated. She said we should practice more at home.
Well, in order to practice, we had to make a rule... no Wii/Computer games until one picture is completed. Today was the first day that rule was in effect. So he begrudgingly colors a picture from a coloring book. I say "Payton, you should try to stay within the lines" (although the artist in me screams YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY IN THE LINES) He says, "Sometimes I get confused by the lines." Then he says "OH! I should connect these-" (meaning the confetti). So he draws lines to connect them. I have a light bulb go off, and ask if he'd like to try a dot to dot. He said he had never done one before, but was excited because there were numbers involved.
The difference was ASTONISHING to me. So then I ask if he wants me to make him one where he can count by 3's. (3 is his favorite # to count by and he can count well past 102). He said, no can you make it 4's so it would be a challenge (He's not as good at counting by 4's). So I oblige. You can't see the numbers probably but I made this in photo shop and did numbers from 4-188 counting by 4's.
This is Princess Peach from the Super Mario Bros. series of games. He has already asked for more... so I think I made a breakthrough with him and art, just at the time I was feeling most helpless. 3/15/2009 Been lazy in updating So to make up for it I changed the photo album and video. Nothing out of the norm, just some candid snaps of us around the house. We were outside this afternoon a bunch enjoying the mild temps. Tomorrow we are expecting 74 degrees, and I am planning on jogging outside again. Today was nice because it was in the lower 60's which is perfect - you can go running and not FEEL overheated. I have a feeling tomorrow being 74 I am really going to think it is blazing hot. 3/3/2009 blahFeeling pretty yucky lately. Partly because my knees and other various joints are not taking my excercise regime well, and partly because I am having gall bladder issues again, or rather- issues resulting from my not having a gall bladder. I regret having it taken out more and more as the months pass. It was a mistake, and I am mad at myself for not researching it more independently first, and just going along with what the doctor said.
I am hoping the upcoming weekend will cheer me up a little. We have a party in Minneapolis we are attending and we are also planning a side visit with some friends.
![]() 2/28/2009 thought I would add photos2/24/2009 Payton is still sick.Payton has been battling illness for going on two weeks now. High temperatures and a sore neck is mostly what his complaints are. Today was his fourth doctor visit, and at this one they did a blood draw from his arm (horrible to have to hold him down for that one) and they are doing blood tests for Mono among other things, but the doctor really thinks it is mono.
According to the doctor if he is up to it he can go to school, but if he is feeling tired he should stay home. I don't know how this is going to work out with Tim and I both working now. I have stayed home one day then Tim the next, but we will have to figure something out. If it is mono I am given to understand that lasts for a month or so.
![]() 2/20/2009 FridayGot my car back yesterday from the body shop. I forgot I had to pay a deductible. I guess I had it in my head I paid the insurance company. Luckily I had the $500 to pay him. They had to wash my whole car in the process of repairing the damaged part, and that made the paint chips on the hood apparant to me. So I want my car to be dirty again soon. :)
Today is my Share Iowa pick up day. I forget what I order each month so it is always a surprise when I go to pick it up. Kind of like getting presents, except I had to pay for them.
http://evilnine.preloaded.com/ Saw this a couple days ago. Very hypnotic video and sound. I don't normally like rap, but oh well. 2/17/2009 Payton getting better.Payton is back in school after being sick for what seemed like a long time. And only just yesterday did he tell me he was starting to "get used" to his cough medicine. At first, he cried and didn't want to take it. We pretty much had to force him. By the time he doesn't need it, he'll probably be craving it.
My sore throat lingers, but I don't think it is going to materialize into anything. Although after working out yesterday, I was so exhausted when I got home. Normally I am not quite that worn out.
Tim is trying his best NOT to get sick. He also has the sore throat, but he has been downing echinacea, olive leaf and orangejuice cocktails like there's no tomorrow.
I can't believe a logo like this made it past review. ![]() 2/14/2009 Valentines PresentsThis is what I made for Tim for Valentine's day. We don't really go all out, I usually get some form of Chocolate (this year was no exception) and I usually get or make something small for Tim. This year it was magnets with little sayings on them. I had thought he would take them to work and stick them on the cabinets above his desk which I thought were metal. Turns out they aren't I guess. Ooops. 2/13/2009 Friday the 13thBeen dealing with a sick Payton, so not much new to report. Supposed to have massive snow today. We'll see. Also, I feel like making sugar cookies. I made oatmeal cookies a couple days ago that were pretty ok. I must be craving cookies.

2/10/2009 Our first $200+ power/heat bill.I don't know how this can happen. I got last months bill which was $197 or so dollars and I thought that was crazy, so I turned the thermostat down for the whole month. I thought for sure this month it would be less, where is our power going to? It wasn't any colder in December as January. It's a mystery. An expensive mystery. I know that most people probably have way higher bills than that (our church can get as high as $3,000 to heat each month) but for us, $200 is very high.
![]() 2/7/2009 I called Stacy today but not in the way I planned.Stacy is my niece from Des Moines. Today is even her 23rd birthday. But I had no plans to call her exactly. My plans were to drive with Payton, to Omaha to get my art supplies, then drive to get groceries then come home - potentially by 1pm.
What happened was my tire tred shredded off at 75 miles an hour on I-29 and in the process snapped part of the rear passenger side panelling off my car. So no one hurt, I don't think any of my shrapnel hit anyone else - or if it did they didn't stop to complain about it. I pull over the car and decide to call Tim. I have a full size spare at home and I don't want to drive on my dinky donut. Also I was worried I would'nt be able to get tire changed properly.
So Tim says he's coming. I get out and start the process of changing the tire. Got the car jacked up and got 2 lug nuts off. The other three were too tight for me. CRAP! I think. Then a nice stranger happened along and got the other three loose for me. He acted like they weren't even stuck on there. Oh well. For me they were. I'm glad he came by even though I am sure Tim would have been able to get them off too. Tim shows up with my full size spare, and puts it on for me. I decide I want to go right away to get a new tire. I also decide to phone into my insurance right away, since my car now needs body work. I call the number on my card. And guess who it is? My niece Stacy. of all the dozens of people in the call center, it happened that I got her! Funny. She knew right away it was me because my info comes up on her screen. Anyway, that brightened my day. And my car should be able to get into the shop Monday and if I want a rental I don't have to pay for it, which is nice. And coincidentally, when I went in to the tire place to have a new one put on they didn't charge me since it was one of their tires and it had been fairly new and still under warranty. So I saved $100 right there!
2/5/2009 CommissionedI got a job for some commissioned paintings, three actually. It all came about from a photo of another painting I did several months ago, that I posted on facebook. My niece Kristine made a comment about it last week (better late than never) and then in turn a friend of mine also saw the painting and she commented as well. Then I got an email from someone I didn't know who was a friend of a friend and who had also seen it, and she wanted me to paint pictures of her kids. Opportunities come from unlikely sources. I'm really excited to start on them, but I have to wait for her to email me the photos of her kids that I can work from, I am expecting them in a few days.
I am really looking forward to going to the art store and getting all the supplies. I haven't bought new painting supplies in a long time, and the art store is my favorite place to browse. I like the art store better than shoe shopping.
2/3/2009 Meatballs galoreI got a mega-box of surplus meatballs from my parents. There is a food manufacturing plant in their town and every so often if you know someone who works there you can get in on the great specials they get. So basically I got a huge box of a billion large meatballs for $2.00. Cheaper than catfood, so if I didn't like them they would be catfood.
The box says these were "test" meatballs for Quiznos Subs. I can vouch that they do in fact taste good, so if this was the final test- it passed with me.
So anyway I have these billion meatballs. Last night was the predictable spagetti and meatballs. Tonight Meatball Subs, but to make them just like restaurant subs I made my own hoagie rolls...
![]() Now I don't know what else to do with meatballs, but the rest are in the freezer for now. We could eat these every day I suppose, but I don't want to get tired of them just yet.2/1/2009 Puppets and PartiesLast night I spent most of the evening constructing pig puppets for Sunday School. I only had white socks, so I dyed them pink by washing them with a red sweater. Then I either glued or sewed on the extras, and used walmart plastic bags for "stuffing" to fill them out. I was pretty pleased with the results since I have never made a puppet this detailed before.
And in about a half an hour we are leaving for our Super Bowl party at Johnnys. Should be fun!
