5/31/2008 Big hole, and grassless areas - Solved... so far.We filled in the big hole and also tilled and reseeded adjacent parts that were "bald" in the yard. I don't know if this will work, or for how long it will work but I my hope is that at least long enough for us to feel it was worth the effort. That hole was big and extended on FOREVER. So we dug out a little more but obviously could not dig up the whole yard. So we packed the new dirt in as far as we could and packed it tight and hopefully that will do it.
It was a fabulous day to get this project done, 80's and breezy enough to keep it cool.
![]() 5/29/2008 ThusdayNo additional eggs in the nest today. I thought maybe I would see another.
Today has mostly been rainy and a little stormy, with the big storms coming later tonight. So remembering the last tornado incident where Payton and I ended up huddled in the downstairs bathtub while it whistled through, I decided to clean the bathtub (we don't use it, so it gets dusty) and then I cleaned the rest of the bathroom up a bit while I was there. Then figuring I would be spending at least some of the evening downstairs because of the tornadoes already predicted, I decided to vacuum and tidy up a little. I am debating just putting Payton to bed down there rather than having to wake him up and rush him downstairs and trying to get him resettled.
![]() 5/28/2008 Part 2 Nest revisited.
Robins usually lay four eggs and then stop. Like most birds, they lay one egg a day until their clutch is complete. If you remove one egg each day, some kinds of birds will keep laying for a long time, as if they can stop laying only when the clutch of eggs feels right underneath them. Robins lay four eggs (or sometimes five) and then, even if only two or three eggs remain in the nest, they stop laying. Until they've laid a full clutch, robins allow all the eggs to stay cool so the babies don't start to develop. That's pretty smart! It means all the babies hatch close to the same time. Mother robins may start incubating their eggs during the evening after the second egg is laid, or after all the eggs are laid. They sit on the eggs for 12 to 14 days. The female usually does all the incubating. Even in good weather, she rarely leaves her eggs for more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time. The eggs usually hatch a day apart in the order they were laid. Naked, reddish, wet, and blind, the babies require A LOT of food. It's a full time job for both parents now to protect the nest, find food, and feed the clamoring babies during the 9-16 days they spend in the nest. So I guess I will be waiting on egg #4 and then perhaps another 12-14 days after that happens we'll have baby robins for a week and a half.
WednesdayRainy again today and sort of cold. So another day stuck inside. One of these days summer will start for real.
I didn't have any good photos from the internet today, so I snagged this from an article I was reading about the demise of "gentleman" in society. This was the how to list at the end on how to bring back the gentleman.
How to be a (modern) gentleman 1. Some things don't change: say please and thank you and ask questions about other people rather than talk about yourself. 2. Be punctual. Tardiness does not make you look important, it turns you into an arrogant incompetent who thinks that his time is more important than other people's. 3. The modern gentleman cares about the planet. Be environmentally aware (but not obnoxious about it). 4. Open doors for people and stand up when they enter a room, but do this for men as well as women. The modern gentleman doesn't treat women like porcelain. 5. Be modest. Bragging is distinctly ungentlemanly. 6. Be a good father. Nothing is less charming than a man who leaves childcare to women. 7. Be honest about wherever you have come from in life. Pretension is spineless. 8. Flirt - with everyone. Good flirting is a form of politeness. Pay compliments and put your companion at ease. 9. Do not phone/text/check your BlackBerry incessantly. 10. Dress tidily. Whatever style you are going for, scruffiness just isn't in. 5/27/2008 HomeWe had a great weekend. We were at Kindschi's house first and we had a great time relaxing and eating and letting the kids play, and of course Rhinersons were there too, so we had 6 kids and 6 adults and so it was quite a group. Then we headed over to LaCrosse to spend the last night at Dave and Carolyn's house, and Tim's mom came down while we were there too. Payton had a great time. In the morning we went to the river park right on the Mississippi. And then we drove home directly from the park. After we got home we got unpacked hurridly and right away got on our swimsuits and went to the pool for opening day and to sign Payton up for swim lessons.
And then somehow it happened that after we put Payton to bed Tim and I did more laptop shopping... I had been wanting a new laptop, and mine is getting slower and slower by the week and I haven't been able to find out why. I wanted a Dell Inspiron 1525. What we found is that the Dell Vostro 1500 is nearly the SAME computer, but $200 cheaper because it only comes in black. The Vostro is considered a "business" computer and the Inspiron is supposed to be for home use. But they had essentially the same specs, although Vostro was actually a bit better. So I have learned an important lesson here about checking all options. I wonder if all computer brands have a "business" model and a "home" model, and if they overcharge on the home model. So we bought the Vostro and saved $200. It should arrive on Monday June 2nd.

5/20/2008 Last Day of SchoolIt is Payton's last day of school today. And yesterday was Payton's last soccer game... He got a medal which he was very enthralled with. It had not only the medal part, which was actually quite official looking just like you might get in high school, but a ribbon so you could wear it around your neck. For a pre-k sport I didn't think such things were necessary, but he enjoyed getting it. I suppose that is part of where our $34 sign up fees went in addition to the uniform.
Soon Swimming lessons will be starting in a few weeks. Summer is kicking in finally. It has been so cold this spring I hardly noticed that it was coming.
Today I have to get to the post office and send my ebay things (I sold 5 more items) and then get in some excercize before Payton comes home at 11, which is a little earlier than normal. Then I guess it will be the summer schedule since we won't have anything to wake up early for until summer school starts. Not sure when I will do my excercising. Last year I think I was waking up early before Tim left for work on the days when it was really hot or doing it at night. I have been enjoying sleeping in until 6:45 or even 7 some days, so that will be hard for me to start getting up really early if I go that route.
5/19/2008 Graduation and projectsI'll get Pics of Kristine's graduation up soon, I just don't have time right now since I have to take Payton to the doctor in 5 minutes. But it was nice. The party was on Saturday and the ceremony on Sunday. The weather could not have been better, Kristine looked faboulous.
And, in spite of travelling back and forth we even got some projects worked on around the house. Tim worked on chainsawing up more trees (He fixed the chainsaw - again) and he got a small start on putting up the new railing... but it isn't up quite yet. And I did more work on our "gully" in the yard. We filled it in with dirt and seeded it and I decided to put some dry grass on top of it to help it from eroding and keep some moisture in.
5/16/2008 Weeds.I have been on a mission to rid the entire lawn of dandilions this year. For those that may not know, our property is over 3 acres... and the mowable "lawn" part is probably an acre. So it is no small task. Adding to the difficulty level is the fact that there are a couple areas on the "outskirts" of the lawn that are weed patches. Nothing but weeds grow there. I have successfully cleared the back "quadrant" of our house, and now the left and right front parts of the house are 90% cleared. What remains is the weed patch. So my routine is each day I go out and go over the whole yard... scan for any stray weeds that popped up since my last patrol, then I go and carpet bomb the weed patch with weed killer spray. Then little by little I see progress and I go back in and hit the areas I missed. It's going to be a summer long battle because new plants are springing up... but my hope is next year a lot fewer will come up to begin with... or at least that is my working theory. It has been the case with my flower bed. I was pretty dilligent with it last year and this year (so far) there has not been much weed activity.
5/15/2008 Payton Home Early5/13/2008 Drill
It was very interesting. And LONG. Even though I got done early I thought it was LONG. We all arrived at 4 for breifing and makeup, the drill started at 5:30 and was to go until perhaps 9:30 but my own part ended at about 7:30, and the rest were wrapped up by 8. First we had to assume positions at 5:30 and wait for the rescue crews to arrive (15 minutes laying on a cement driveway with plywood piled over and around us) Some people were "walking" wounded, and some people were playing the part of agitators- coming to find family members and getting in the way. As I said the first responders got there in about 15 minutes and began processing. There were I think about 30 live actors, and they also had dummies too... so I don't know exactly how many 'casualties' in all. One fellow lay down in the bushes to be injured and they didn't find him for a half hour... oops. But that was a good call- and a good teaching experience I thought. For my own case- I got first treated in about 30 minutes from the time of the start of the drill. People came to talk to me, but I first got aid after 30 mintues. I was put in a neck brace first, then on a wood strecher board and given oxygen. I was on that hard board and in that neck brace for probably an hour maybe an hour and a half and let me tell you I am sore. That was no picnic. I did get three ambulance rides, and I had to go through decontamonation twice... That part was a bit of an error, since I was only supposed to go through decontamination once and go on the ambulance to the hospital and back. So that part could have gone smoother... but all in all I was impressed by the whole operation. They had units from all over the county come in and they all worked together very well and seemed to be coordinated. I assumed I lived although my injury was classified as "red" which is the most serious. There were four classifications, Green which were walking wounded, Yellow which were somewhat more serious but not life threatening, Red which was life threatening, and Black- DEAD. I saw for sure there were at least two people that got the black cards. YesterdayWanted to have a link to the Tony Chestnut video still available in case anyone still wanted to view it. Soon, I am going to be posting a new one from Payton's soccer game yesterday. He really had a good time, and we were proud he decided to play. He loves going to soccer practices, but the last game he didn't want to play no matter what we said we could not get him to go into the game. This time we didn't force the issue and I just told him we'd let him decide. At first he said he didn't want to but then was asking who else was playing... and then right before the game was to start he said he wanted to go. Earlier that morning Dad came out to go mushroom hunting and didn't find much. I decided rather than fry the few there were I would try to make a sauce. It wasn't that successful. The mushroomy flavor didn't really come through. But I tried something new. I know there are dozens of morel recipes out there. I didn't have time to properly research them. 5/11/2008 weekendMother's Day was nice, didn't do anything especially different from the norm, which is fine by me. I got some kitchen gagets that I had been wanting and a lovely handmade card and that suited me.
Saturday we went to go buy supplies to replace our railing on our front stoop. We ran into Casey (my niece Kristine's long time boyfriend) and he said he had just had this strange feeling he would be seeing us that day. Weird!! But sometimes you just get those premonitions. Anyway we got the railing- a very handsome white aluminum number. I was glad we went to Menards rather than Home Depot. I felt like we got 10x better service. Home depot feels like a better organized store to me, but you can always find people who are willing to help you at Menards- which is the difference when you are doing a project you have never done before.
Today Tim worked on getting the old railing off and after a little difficulty with the rusted on bolts had success. We were left with the screws sticking out of the cement and we couldn't reuse the same ones so they will have to go. We called Kim (Brother in law) to ask what was the best way to remove them since he has done some construction type work and would know, and he said he would let us borrow his saw-all tool (I think that is what he called it- Tim was the one who talked to him). So until we can get our hands on that we are stuck for now. So I hope nobody falls off. Not that the railing we had would have prevented anyone from falling, but the psycological effect of having something there was nice. It is quite a drop.
Trojan Horse
5/9/2008 Concert Pics / Video and stuffI changed the photos to the preschool concert last night and I changed the video above to Payton's favorite song that he sang "Tony Chestnut" or maybe it should be called "ToeKnee ChestNut" but it was a big hit. Very funny song- and Payton was being quite animated.
Afterwards got to tour his "new" preschool class for next year. He will graduate to the older preschool. There are three preschool rooms, the head start (which I don't really understand what that one is), the 3 year old and the 4 year old and then those are broke up further into smaller classes.
![]() 5/8/2008 DietTim has gone on a diet for work, so because of this I also decide to work out a little more than normal and eat a little less, except I start gaining weight. I have gained 3 pounds in as many days. So much for cutting out my nightly ice cream and afternoon snacks. I know that there is some sort of explanation for this, but I'm not smart enough to know it.
5/6/2008 CatsWe haven't got our 3 cats yet that I mentioned we would be getting before. There was some difficulty with getting the cats from the people they are with now ( I think it is a scheduling problem- but I am not 100% sure), I am hoping that this will be resolved soon. The people at the cat rescue place said they will keep me posted.
5/5/2008 Finally warm weatherToday it got up to nearly 80, or maybe it did get up to 80... I didn't check. So I took advantage and did my running outside.
Today also reresents day one of Tim's new "diet" for work. He had been cramming in the calories in an attempt to gain weight so he would have some weight to lose. It hadn't gone so well and we had problems with him losing weight no matter what he ate (typical Tim), but in the end he did end up gaining a few pounds at the last minute. So no more deep fat frying everything and making cakes and brownies and cookies. Today I made whole wheat pita chips. They are actually good for you, and don't taste half bad either. In retrospect I would have salted them before baking... but this was my first time making them so I had no point of refrence. I still could brine them and rebake... but that is more work than I care to do. I'll just remember to salt them if I ever make another batch.
Perhaps his bus runs on solar power? 5/4/2008 DawsonToday we went to a party at Chataqua Park Oakland to meet Johnny and Lindsy's new son Dawson, who is very cute. We were there all afternoon until about 5 or so. Payton had a good time playing on the park equipment and we had a good time visiting with everyone. I saw two old friends from high school I hadn't seen in forever as well, so you never know what surprises are in store.
Interesting.
