10/30/2008 How to do stuff fast.I Stumbled upon a series of neat little videos about how to do things FASTER. There were 20 or so that I saw, and probabably more, they were by "sprintcuts" should you feel inclined to look up more. Thought I would share.
10/28/2008 Tuesday10/27/2008 Felt busier than it was I guess.Just got Payton home from Grandma and Grandpa's house. So Tim and I had an extended weekend of no Payton. We didn't go on a date anywhere because quite honestly all the movies were pretty crappy. So we instead steam cleaned our carpets. And did some work on Sunday School. We also ordered a lot of pizza. But still a nice break. I still wonder where the time went because it didn't seem like I got a lot accomplished.
One fun thing is I got to play with Shrinky Dinks. I had some shrinky dink plastic sheets ordered for Sunday School, but I wanted to test to make sure my patterns would work/be the right size. I hadn't played with Shrinky Dinks since probably the early 80's. But they are still cool as ever. I made a key chain thingy. If this puts you in the mood for shrinky dinks, you can get 50 sheets of the plastic for $30 delivered from the Shrinky Dink website.
10/23/2008 WhewPayton went to Grandma's today and will stay until Monday. Tim and I dropped him off after I got done with work this morning, and Tim also brought back Dad's new computer and got it all set up for him. Everything worked but the printer, but that was no problem because we had an extra printer that Dad had given us, and we will bring that one back for him.
Then after that we went to the HyVee in Harlan. On the way I noticed more wind turbines going up. I have been seeing semi trucks hauling massive pieces of these turbines for the last several months, and when I went to Des Moines a new crop of them had sprung up around Adair. I think they are attractive myself. I don't know why people like Ted Kennedy thought they were eyesores and wouldn't allow them to be erected near their homes. According to a story I found on the internet MidAmerican energy in Iowa will have 600 turbines in operation all over Iowa by the end of this year. I believe it, I have been seeing dozens, and I haven't been all over Iowa.
![]() 10/22/2008 SchoolHad Payton's Parent Teacher conferences last night. Nothing we didn't already know came up. Payton ahead of the curve academically, since they only expect children to be able to count to 10 and recognize the letters of the alphabet. (I think 50% of the kids already know these things) He needs to work on his coloring, he still does not like staying in the lines.
I had been a little worried that he would not be "challenged" at all (academically speaking) but those fears were put to rest when the teacher told me that she does do some math with him (which he loves) and reading and writing words. Not that I think it is the job of the school to do that, I think it is ultimately a parents job to teach, but I was glad that they are reinforcing what we are doing with him at home. I don't know how this will work in later grade levels, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
10/19/2008 Home10/17/2008 Tim is gone...10/16/2008 Thursday10/15/2008 Busy DayIt was a very busy day today. I had a health screening (yearly thing for getting discounted insurance rates), I went shopping, had my hair cut, had a nice lunch with Tim, then did more shopping and more shopping. Then I went back home to pick up Payton from the school, then I had a thing to go to at the school in the evening (all volunteers got to go to the bookfair for a special preview) And then finally choir practice and home.
These are photos from the Book Fair at the school. I did all the artwork for it, so I thought I would show it off. I was surprised by how SMALL they look up on the walls when they were so absolutely massive in size when I made them. The giraffe is nearly 7 feet tall and just as wide.
Tim is gearing up for the weekend (Guys LAN Party in Wisconsin). He is getting his computer ready, and also setting up a new computer my dad just bought and dropped off here this morning. Tim was pretty impressed, I guess Dad bought nearly the same model of computer he has.
Anyway though, since Tim is going off this weekend on his own, I am gearing up for a weekend in Des Moines (Payton is coming too). 10/12/2008 date nightI added some new photos mostly of church stuff.
Last night Tim and I DID get out date night. Our babysitter worked out well, and we already hired her again for Thursday night because we wanted to go to a seminar thing at church for an hour. On our date we went to see An American Carol. It wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. There were some parts that I thought kind of crossed the lines of good taste. But there were some really great parts, but I think overall not the best movie.
Is this in bad taste then?
10/10/2008 Walked to workI got to walk to work this morning. Tim was working from home, so he could cart Payton to school and wait for the bus when he came home. So I walked to work and then brought my running clothes with me and ran home. My pedometer says it is 3 miles one way. I didn't realize it was that long. I was thinking 2.5. So I got in 6 miles today. Not bad. I really liked it. I wish I could do that more!
![]() 10/9/2008 PaytonSitterI broached the subject with Payton of getting a babysitter (other than my folks) this weekend. (There is a girl in our church who was looking for some work, and Payton pretty much adores her).
I was not sure how he would respond to it, but he was enthusiastic about the idea except he was upset I called it "babysitter" because he says he's not a baby. So I called her house and I spoke to her dad about it, but she might be going to visit family this weekend. So I said to call back and let us know. So I don't know if he's going to have his "PaytonSitter" or not. I promised him we'd try it some other weekend if this one doesn't work out.
But, just in case, I sought out the help of my niece Kristine who babysat kids when she was in highschool not to very long ago... and I asked what the going rate is. She pretty much confirmed my suspicion of $5 an hour for one kid. Back in the day when I did that I only made $2 an hour usually. Inflation.
10/8/2008 Music DiscoveriesI was trying to find music for November's Sunday School Rotation on Shadrach Meshach and Abednego. There are NOT many songs out there for kids. There are actually quite a few "adult" songs I was surprised to learn. Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, The Beasty Boys and Brook Benton all have songs about this Bible story. My favorite (of course) is the Johnny cash one just because I am partial to him (and because I am a 6th cousin of his, at least that's what my mom tells me anyway) The Louis Armstrong Song is really jazzy too though. I still wish I had more kids songs though. I found a few, but they seemed kind of dumb to me. Maybe because I am not a kid. If anyone knows of a kid's song with this bible story theme, send it my way. (Ideally I'd love to get the music for a guitar on it but I'll take just take anything at this point!)
10/7/2008 Rainy10/6/2008 Time fliesSunday we started the new rotation theme at Sunday School... "Life in Jesus' Times" but already I am focused on the next rotation for November, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego". I'm glad I wrote these well in advance... It does make it a little less stressful. December will of course be the Christmas story, and in January I am tentively thinking of doing the Prodigal Son, which I already wrote out too. Who knows, I may find one I like better before then.
Tim is in full swing with the popcorn for Boyscouts. He's organizing the fundraising this year. So we have people coming to the house picking up popcorn and calling the house about popcorn. But the garage which was full of popcorn boxes is now pretty cleared out.
Work is going well. I have been pretty steadily busy since I started. Today I got nearly caught up and am just waiting for an "ok to go" signal from the CEO to start on my spreadsheet project.
10/2/2008 I love working.Today I felt like I didn't want to leave work. I have a lot of work to do, and it is in a pile about a foot high on my desk. This isn't a bad thing, actually I am excited to go back to work tomorrow morning and dig in. I got a new project (on top of all my other ones) I'm combining inventory spreadsheets for two companies. Energique and a company that just merged with us. The fun part will be trying to interpret the data from each of the companies/divisions and then merging them into one uniform layout, and then I guess the end result is that we are supposed to have more streamlined ordering of raw materials. Makes sence. I really love my job. Mostly because they give me a project and leave me alone. That is my ideal working style.
Anyhow, I did get my key for the gym today, and Payton and I stayed a while to work out. It wasn't that great a work out for me because I had to keep a close eye on Payton. But I got in my weights and some stationary biking. But this means that I can get up tomorrow at 4:45 to work out. I really liked sleeping in until 6:15 this morning.
![]() 10/1/2008 No key = sleep in.My gym called to tell me that I should not come in tomorrow morning to do my workout at 5am because they just had the locks changed and my key won't work. (I am the only one there at that early hour so they gave me a key to get into the building.) So I'll have to go pick my key up tomorrow after work sometime. Already I am looking forward to sleeping in until 6. Maybe even 6:30.
It has been SO hard to wake up every morning, and I have been having to go to bed a lot earlier just so I don't fall asleep in the afternoon.
